Guest workers mark Memorial Day with singing contest for kids

June Concillado, vice president of the United Workers Movement, said the event had  four participants in division 1 and 10 in division 2.

Division 1 was for children six to nine years old, while division 2 was for 10 to 16 years old.

During the event, peace and human rights advocates delivered their messages in honor of America’s fallen servicemembers.

Rita Doca, daughter of Ronnie Doca, United Workers Movement chairman, read the message of U.S.-based human rights advocate and former Rota teacher Wendy Doromal.

“The fact that the organizers of this event and most of the participants are not United State citizens shows the depth of your love for our great country,” Doromal’s stated in her letter.

“There are some people here today who are not U.S. citizens but their children have put on uniforms to selflessly serve,” she added.

Dr. Gene Sylvester Eagle-Oden, Glushko Academy of Performing Arts president, said the American Constitution was born on the dream of equality for all men.

“These loyal American all died believing that you and I and everyone living on these islands are equal not only in God’s sight but that we should treat each other as equals as well,” he said.

The other speakers were Northern Marianas College business department chairman Dr. John Griffin and Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner.

Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement president, said the competition showed the “American spirit” of the children.

The division 1 winners were Patreisha Mae Concillado, first place; Breanna Laureen Olayres, second; and Farzana Syed, third.

Mary Antoinette Alovera topped division 2. Erica Faye Tubera placed second while Josefine Kate Perena finished third.

Concillado said all participants received certificates of appreciation and the top winners also received trophies.

The other contestants were Marchie Lynn Sayas, Ryan Ali Bhuiyan, Mikee Campo, Dyan Hermogenes, Anabelle Manzo, Abigail Nasangas, Judy Sanchez, and Roma Syed.

The judges were NMC instructor Frank Sobolewski, Ernie Molina, Nancy Kelchner and Walden Q. Beri.

The event was sponsored by Coca Cola and Dollar Days.
