Guest workers mull creation of one ‘solid’ group

Rene Reyes, Coalition of United Workers president, said they are “working for a common cause and our goal is for the good of all guest workers. We can create a united group.”

United Workers Movement president Rabby Syed said he has been working for the unity of all guest workers and their rally on May 1 should “attest to my noble efforts to achieve harmony with all groups.”

He added, “We need to be united now.”

Itos Feliciano, Human Dignity Movement president, said his group will always support whatever is for the common good of all guest workers.

“We don’t have any problem joining with them,” he said.

On Tuesday, Feliciano said they received a reply to their e-mail to Philippine Vice President Noli de Castro, the presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers.

De Castro’s staff officer Sheryl M. Dela Cruz requested more information about the guest workers in the CNMI, Feliciano said.

Syed said he and other Bangladeshis on island will ask the assistance of their top government leaders.

“It would be more helpful to have a government to government communication,” he said.

On Monday night, the group held a two-hour program outside the TSL Plaza where the office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is located.

Reyes said more of their supporters joined the assembly after office hours.

“We received donations of food and cash,” he added.

There had been no reports of untoward incident and everybody was cooperative, he said, adding that their assembly was peaceful.
