Guest workers should not hope for more in release of regulations

He said there are many jobless nonresidents who remain on island hoping they would get improved immigration status.

“I’m worried about their situation. They are the ones who will be affected by the regulations,” he said.

He believes having an umbrella permit is  not a guarantee that a nonresident can remain here once the regulations are announced.

In addition, a small company employing guest workers may close shop if it can’t afford to pay the processing fees that will be included in the regulations.

Sagana said guest workers should focus on securing an improved status instead of waiting for the regulations which Gov. Benigno R. Fitial believes will be out between late this month and early June.
