THE CNMI Customs Services Division has terminated its seven-year-old gun and drug amnesty program that has collected only trash.
Capt. Juan Cepeda, acting Customs director, yesterday said the amnesty box that had been installed in an area visible to newly disembarked airline passengers at Saipan International Airport had been removed.
In 1995, Customs installed the amnesty box for illegal drugs or ammunition.
“But regular inspections showed that the box contained only garbage and trash,” said Cepeda.
Cepeda said Customs will continue to inspect incoming passengers and baggage for any illegal items.
Last year, Customs said the program did not yield any guns despite moves to make the program more visible to newly arrived passengers.
