Gun holders asked to renew licenses, registrations

Acting DPS spokesman Jason T. Tarkong said there are 785 gun holders with expired registrations and licenses in the CNMI.

Tarkong said of Saipan’s 1,638 gun owners, 488 are holders of expired registrations.

Tinian has 161 gun holders, 90 of whom have expired registrations while Rota has 367 gun holders, 207 of whom have expired registrations.

“Gun owners with expired licenses will have 30 days from today to register or transfer their firearms. We ask these people to please come forward and have your weapon(s) registered,” Tarkong said.

He added that DPS will take action against noncomplying gun owners.

He said under Commonwealth Code, Title 6, Chapter 2, Weapons Control Act, subsection 2204 (b) 4, the date of expiration for the firearms permit, will be two years from the date of issue.

“Failure to have your gun(s) registered is a violation and violators can be charged with illegal possession of firearms,” Tarkong said.
