Gustavo Ybanez arrested for snatching tourist’s purse

Superior Court Judge David A. Wiseman imposed a $25,000 bail on Ybanez who is being held on charges of robbery, theft, and disturbing the peace.

If he would post bail, the court directed Ybanez to stay away from the victims or potential witnesses; will not travel to Garapan; and will stay 200 feet away from any hotel or tourist sites.

Ybanez, a Dandan resident, was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday morning.

Assistant Attorney General Eileen Wisor represented the government, while Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig was appointed as Ybanez’ counsel.

Detective Raymond B. Borja said police were dispatched to a reported robbery incident in front of Bobby Cadillac’s Café at about 8:45 p.m. last week, Thursday.

Police met the victim while being attended to by medics. She suffered bruises, scratches to her left arm, fingers, and right knee area, police said.

The victim, together with her boyfriend, was walking on the pathway as she passed by Bobby Cadillac’s when a male individual came from behind and grabbed her purse.

The suspect, later identified as Ybanez through a photo line-up, was then wearing a red t-shirt, and a light color pair of short pants.

Ybanez ran and entered the front passenger door of the get-away vehicle, a dark silver Nissan Pathfinder.

“She held onto the rear passenger door. The vehicle sped off. She fell to the ground. When the victim fell to the ground, her left arm got ran over by the vehicle’s tire,” Borja told the court.

A witness told police she and another friend were walking out of Bobby Cadillac’s, when they heard  heard shouting from the roadway. The witness told police she could identify the suspect if she saw him again.

On Nov. 17, 2011, Borja said he learned from Detective Roque K. Camacho that there was an ongoing investigation regarding stealing beers from several stores.

One of the complainants had surveillance camera footage of the incident showing a individual, later identified as Ybanez, who matched the description of the suspect in this case.

On Nov. 22, police met the witness and presented her a police lineup. She identified Ybanez as the one who snatched her purse.
