Syed earlier received a phone call from a local man who threatened to kill him and his family. Last August, Joaquin H. Tenorio was sentenced to a 30-day jail term for assault and disturbing the peace of Syed.
The guest worker advocate said such acts do not reflect the sentiment of the local community.
“I am involved in many social activities and my wife is Chamorro so I have very good family ties with locals. I’m no stranger here,” he said.
Recently elected as president of the Parent Teacher Association of Hopwood Junior High School, Syed has been a member of the Head Start Policy Council, Crime Stoppers, the Northern Marianas College Honor Society, vice president of an NMC business club and president of the Saipan Taxi Association.
He is also a member of the Marianas Visitors Authority.
Syed doesn’t mind being branded a “terrorist,” which everyone knows is untrue, but he is saddened to hear someone calling nonresidents, or anyone for that matter, “stupid.”
“That’s hurtful,” he said.
Syed said he didn’t report the graffiti to the authorities and will not make any effort to remove it.
The United Workers Movement, he added, is exercising its rights in a democratic society and respects other people’s opinions.
