The purpose of their visit was to meet with Yap state coordinators of the program and follow up with former job corps students.
Job Corps is a no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through vocational and academic training.
Established in 1964 Job Corps’ mission is to attract eligible young people, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education.
There are about 287 Yapese who have participated in the program either in Hawaii, California, Nevada, or Utah.
Today there are fewer students in only three of these centers: Hawaii, Reno, and Utah.
Most of Yap’s participants have returned to the island and some of them are working in the state’s workforce.
The two visitors paid a courtesy call on Gov. Sebastian Anefal before heading to Palau.
