Health advocates commend 2 smoke-free restaurants

Howard I. Macaranas, Office of Aging director and committee co-vice chairman, said these establishments are Winchell’s Doughnuts  and Shirley’s Coffee Shop.

The program committee is now formulating the rules for its smoke-free challenge that can be adopted by other establishments on island, Macaranas said.

The committee, he added, will aggressively promote non-smoking challenge and recognize business establishments during its month-long celebration in September.

Macaranas said the committee is still accepting recommendations from the private sector, government agencies, and non-government organizations regarding its planned smoke-free challenge.

He said they will also recognize the Seventh-Day Adventist Church which has been practicing a no-smoking policy.

“We are happy to know that other establishments have already designated areas for smoking,” Macaranas said.

Asked about Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s opposition to banning smoking in public places, Macaranas said his boss’ stance is “fair” because the chief executive is concerned about  businesses.

Macaranas said their campaign will allow visitors who don’t smoke to know the locations of smoke-free places on island.

To set as example, Macaranas has encouraged members of the committee not to smoke.

The committee, he added, will also conduct educational programs and presentations regarding the effects of smoking and other anti-smoking programs.
