HERMAN’S Modern Bakery celebrated 80 years of serving the island with a Family Fun Day community event at the Airport Field in As Lito on Saturday, Nov. 9.
From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Herman’s Modern Bakery served free burgers, hot dogs, and more. The bakery also provided complimentary treats from vendors, such as Tupu Cane Juice, Marpac, and BenKi’s.
The event featured other family friendly activities, including a bouncy house, kiddie train rides, static displays from the Department of Public Safety and the Saipan International Airport Aircraft Rescue Firefighters, corn hole, a dunk tank, and much more.
In addition, Herman’s Modern Bakery gave away branded items, such as beach chairs, golf umbrellas, drink koozies, and more.
Rudy Guerrero, sales and marketing manager of Herman’s Modern Bakery, said this is how the family-owned business shows the community its appreciation.
“This is our ‘thank you’ to the CNMI community for the last 80 years,” he said. “All the support and business that the community of the CNMI has given to the Guerrero family, this is our ‘thank you’ for them.”
In his remarks, Herman Guerrero Jr., the board president and son of founder Herman “Pan” Guerrero, said:
“On behalf of Herman’s Modern Bakery and the board of directors I would like to welcome all of you. And I want to thank also all of our staff from the top to the bottom that have made [a difference] — those that have served us in the past 80 years, and also the community that [has] helped us maintain Herman’s Modern Bakery for the past 80 years.”
Rudy Guerrero said the “sky is the limit” for what comes next for Herman’s Modern Bakery.
“We just launched at K-Mart in Guam a couple of weeks ago, [and] we’re looking at getting [into] more stores in Guam,” he said. “We are looking to go into Palau and Chuuk, to the other islands out there. Ideally, we want to share our special products with the world eventually. We have a big population of our people out in the mainland, and we get a lot of requests to ship out there. The process via mail is not ideal for bread, but one day, someday we’ll get our bread out there for our people.”
According to the company’s website, Herman’s Modern Bakery was founded in 1944 by Herman Reyes Guerrero and his wife Maria Camacho Tenorio.
The bakery was originally a “humble Mom and Pop operation with only four employees” located in Chalan Kanoa. In 1979, it moved to its current location in As Lito.
Through the years, it has become famous in the region for a wide variety of baked products, to include sweet bread, pan tuba, sandies, Chamorro cookies, cakes, and more.
