‘He’s my choice’

Fitial told reporters that Camacho has the “right temperament” to serve in the CNMI judiciary.

Asked why Camacho should be the next judge, the governor said: “He’s my choice.”

Elected a Republican House member in 2007, Camacho was former Sen. Juan T. Guerrero’s running mate in the 2009 elections. They ran on an independent ticket and finished third in the four-way race.

Camacho then supported Fitial in the gubernatorial runoff.

Last year, Camacho ran as the governor’s candidate for the U.S. Congress but lost to the incumbent, Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.

Fitial said Camacho is “more than qualified” to be a judge.

“I like his temperament. I have never seen him get emotionally disturbed,” the governor said.

Early this month, Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, introduced a legislative initiative that will reduce the number of CNMI judges from five to four.

He said his proposal, if passed by lawmakers and ratified by voters, will allow the governor not to fill a trial court vacancy.

Fitial said even if the legislative initiative passes, it will not have any impact on Camacho’s nomination.

Asked for comment, Camacho said he is “very much honored if nominated to such a prestigious and honorable position.”
