High wind watch

(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) — Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, a high wind watch remains in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday through late Thursday night on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph possible.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

An extensive synoptic low moving off the coast of Japan, in addition to a strong high following closely behind it, will produce a substantially stronger shear line that could bring damaging winds to the region Wednesday. A high wind advisory or warning is possible as early as Wednesday morning.

Gov. Arnold I. Palacios is advising the general public to monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location prior to the onset of winds.
