Hindus to hold religious festival

Dubbed as the “Sri Sri Durga Puja” or the Hindu Greatest Religion Festival 2010, the event will be held at the Hindu Temple or Radha Krishna Mandir in Chalan Kanoa.

CNMI Hindu Community general secretary Bimal C. Sutradhar said the four-day holy ceremony will begin with the “awakening of the Goddess Durga” on Oct. 13.

Their priests, Gonesh Pande and Haridash Chakrabarty, will pray with them in the temple.

On Oct. 13, the ceremony will start at 5:35 a.m.

On Oct. 14, it will be held from 5:45 p.m. to 12 midnight while the ceremony on Oct. 15 will start at 6:43 p.m. and end at 12 midnight.

On Oct. 16, it will start at 8:56 p.m. and end at 12 midnight.

The ceremonies on Oct. 17 will start at 9:41 p.m. and end at 10:47 p.m.

Prior to the worship on Sunday, Sutradhar said they will have a cultural presentation, which includes dance and song numbers, starting at 7 p.m.

“Everybody is invited,” he said.

When it was established in 2000, the Hindu community had over 500 members.

Currently, they have more than 200 members, Sutradhar said.

Their members are from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The other officers of the Hindu community are Madhav S. Hamelani, president; Sandeep Rai, vice president; and Anand Katta, treasurer.
