The club meets twice a week, and its members are seventh and eighth graders.
“They play chess, checkers and magic cards — games that promote high order thinking and looking ahead, logic and abstract situations, and with magic cards they have the added advantage of reading,” teacher Aaron Mar said.
Mar and fellow social studies teacher Joe Chatters are the club’s coordinators.
“We can get them into reading after school and enjoy and do it for fun, that’s what it does,” said Mar.
The games, he added, help increase math skills, comprehensive and strategic thinking while promoting fair play and sportsmanship.
“I know kids who have been playing at the beginning of the year now and their math skills are greatly improving,” said Chatters.
The club meets at lunchtime every Tuesday and Friday.
