House defers action on AG’s bill

Palacios, R-Saipan, asked House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho, R-Saipan, and Rep. Rosemond B. Santos, R-Saipan, to work with the House counsel on the pending bill.

Senate President Pete P. Reyes, R-Saipan, sponsored S.B. 16-51 which the Senate already passed.

The bill mandates that an attorney who served as an acting AG should not be allowed to be nominated for the post within a two-year period unless the governor nominates him within 30 days after his designation.

The bill states that it is unlawful for anyone who acts as interim AG for 90 days without a Senate confirmation.

Reyes also wants the acting AG who has held the post for over 90 days to be personally liable for violating the law.

Acting Attorney General Gregory Baka described the bill as “convoluted and literally promotes or invites litigation.”

Baka has held the position of acting AG since September last year.
