KOROR (Palau Horizon) — The House Committee on Foreign Affairs has endorsed the ratification of the agreement reaffirming the Palau government’s commitment to a nuclear free zone and the creation of a monitoring station to detect unlawful nuclear tests.
President Tommy Remengesau recently signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and entered into an agreement for the operation of a monitoring station in Palau that will serve as a key component in a worldwide network that monitors illegal nuclear tests.
The treaty prohibits the explosion of nuclear devices for military or civilian purposes. It also aims to reduce the potential for nuclear conflict by prohibiting the testing of such weapons.
The House committee said the country’s signing of the treaty will further Palau’s commitment to ban nuclear weapons and gain international recognition for its many efforts in the field.
The committee added that it is in the best interest of Palau to ratify the agreement.
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization will fund the establishment of the monitoring station.
