House wants sewer plant relocated

By a voice vote, House approved H.R. 17-36 which was introduced by Rep. Ray N. Yumul, R-Saipan.

Noting that the sewer plant is in a residential area, Yumul, R-Saipan, said the CUC sewer plant emits toxic fumes that pollute the air.

The Puerto Rico sewer plant serves the residents on the northern side of Saipan.  CUC’s other sewer plant in Agingan Point serves those on the southern side.

Some residents, especially those who jog along Middle Road in Puerto Rico, told Variety that a portion of the road in Lower Base “stinks.” They believe it comes from the pipe that goes all the way from the sewer plant.

The resolution states that the continuous operation of the sewer plant means continuous air pollution, thus, “infringing” the personal right of residents to a clean and healthy environment.

H.R. 17-36 wants CUC to collaborate with the Division of Environmental Quality to cease the operation of sewer plant and relocate it to a more suitable area.
