Detective Buddy Igitol said the victim and her mother reported the incident on April 25, 2011.
Police said the theft and forgery was discovered on April 21 after the victim’s mother was at her work place, when she was approached by Gui Han Xu who was working at Ming Yang Store in San Vicente.
Xu’s visit was to collect money from two invalid or insufficient checks that belonged to the victim.
The victim said the accounts from which the checks were made out had been closed for several years.
When confronted, Castillo, a houseworker at the victim’s mother’s residence since 2009, admitted taking and forging the checks because “she needed money.”
Police said the amount was $515, plus $150 in insufficient charge fee for each check.
Superior Court Judge David A. Wiseman allowed Castillo to post $500 in unsecured or appearance bond and to surrender her passport.
Assistant Attorney General Tiberius Mocanu represented the government while Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig was appointed as Castillo’s counsel.
