Humanities Council invites community to help influence its strategic master plan

THE Northern Marianas Humanities Council invites the public to help shape its 2026-2030 strategic master plan by submitting input to its 2025 Community Needs and Interests Survey.

The survey is available at nmhcouncil.org/communitysurvey

It will take around five minutes to complete and asks numerous questions, including the kinds of topics the council should produce in the future, and what responders would like to see the council achieve in the next five years.

Additionally, the council invites the community to take part in its upcoming programmatic activities.

Executive Director Leo Pangelinan said Feb. 15 is the deadline to register for a Chamorro and Carolinian language project that focuses on parents.

Pangelinan said the council is looking to “build a language community” for adults with some knowledge of the Chamorro and/or Carolinian languages but who don’t yet have language fluency. The program will take place over a few months, with two-hour practice sessions held every few weeks.  The council will announce more details later, but Pangelinan said priority participation will be given to parents whose children are students in the Chamorro and Carolinian language programs of the Public School System.

In addition, the council will host a Digital Preservation Lab on Tinian on Feb. 20. Council staff will help residents digitize their photos, documents, and other important artifacts for archival purposes.

On Feb. 22, the council will host the My Marianas Writing Contest workshop. A workshop facilitator will assist high school students in preparing essays for submission to the My Marianas Writing Contest. This year’s theme is “The Threads of Tradition.” Specific submission details will be announced later.

March 15 is the deadline for Council Community Grant Program applications.

On March 26, there will be a “Chat and Chesa” event on Tinian, where the council will host a conversation around a humanities topic while also serving food and beverages. More details will be announced soon.
