Illegal cockfights linked to illegal drugs

He said government workers, especially those with the enforcement agencies, are participating in these illegal cockfights,

“They are not enforcing the law.  We actually need them but they are not helping us,” Borja told Variety as he urged members of the community to be more vigilant and to report any illegal cockfights in their villages.

“Cockers” usually gather at a meeting place and inform other persons to place bets during  illegal cockfights.

The property owner, Borja said,  sells beverages and some of the “cockers smoke  marijuana,” which is also sold in the area, Borja said.

These illegal activities usually occur at “abandoned places” or in secluded areas, he added.

“It is happening somewhere, and you can smell it,” he said, referring to the marijuana.

These illegal cockfights occur not only during weekends but also on weekdays, he added.

Borja admitted that illegal cockfights are “hard to control” without a government crackdown and the cooperation of the community members.

Today, the Saipan Cockfight Board will meet with the operator of the Saipan Cockfight Arena, Maryann D. Calvo, and those who have complaints against her management.

Borja said the meeting will take place at the new cockfight arena in As Gonno.
