Charles Dewey III, also known as Carter Widmor, enters the local courthouse escorted by a Corrections officer on Wednesday.
ACTING Governor David M. Apatang signed a governor’s warrant on Monday, Feb. 26 to extradite Charles L. Dewey III to Indiana.
The following day, as requested by Assistant Attorney General Heather Barcinas, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho issued an extradition order.
The judge instructed the Department of Corrections to surrender Dewey, 27, to Allen County Sheriff Troy Hershberger “and/or his designee(s), including U.S. Prisoner Transport Services, Blue Knight Security, and/or the U.S. Marshals Service, as agent of this State to receive the defendant to transport him to the State if Indiana, to be dealt with according to law.”
Indiana’s requisition to extradite that was signed by Gov. Eric J. Holcomb was also served on Dewey, who has been accused of, among other things, rape and sexual misconduct with a minor.
In the CNMI, the Office of the Attorney General charged Dewey with one count of being a fugitive from justice.
Representatives from the Allen County Sheriff’s Department were scheduled to arrive on Saipan on Wednesday, Feb. 28 to transport and deliver Dewey to the State of Indiana, AAG Barcinas told the court.
“It is further confirmed that their departure from the CNMI is scheduled for Feb. 29, 2024,” she added.
Dewey, who said he was innocent, fled Indiana after six arrest warrants were issued against him.
He has active warrants in Allen County, Indiana for Level 1 Felony Rape; three counts of Level 4 Felony Sexual Misconduct with a Minor; Level 5 Felony Child Solicitation; Level 4 Felony Failure to Appear on Child Solicitation; and several Misdemeanor warrants.
The warrants were issued in 2020 and 2021.
In a feature article published by Variety a year ago, Dewey, as “Carter Widmor,” said he was a cancer survivor who taught people how to play guitar for a minimal fee and was also a professional web designer.
In September 2023, “Widmor,” who said he was born in an Amish community, complained that the local Social Security Administration office had refused to issue him a Social Security number.
On Jan. 29, 2024, a multi-agency federal and local law enforcement task force arrested “Widmor” at the Kagman Community Health Center where he worked.
