Informational report filed on probationer arrested for turtle poaching

Greggory Sablan Kalen was directed by the federal probation office to have no further association or social contact with Vicente A. Sablan outside of his residence.

Kalen, Sablan and Daniel Repeki were arrested last August on the charge of green sea turtle poaching.

Kalen said he captained the boat for Sablan and Repeki who went on spear fishing.

After Sablan hoisted a turtle onto the boat, Kalen and Repeki told Sablan to return the turtle to the ocean, but Sablan refused.

Upon their arrival on shore, a Fish and Wildlife officer approached them and discovered the turtle in the boat.

The Attorney General’s Office moved for the dismissal of the case against Kalen, saying he was not involved in the case.

Sablan has admitted the charge of possession of a green sea turtle which is an endangered and threatened species.

Sablan was sentenced to six months imprisonment, all suspended except for three months, with credit for time served.

He is expected to be released from prison on Nov. 10, 2011 and will be placed on three years’ probation. Sablan will pay a $500 fine, court costs and a probation fee.

On Oct. 8, 2008, then-Chief Judge Alex R. Munson sentenced Kalen with six months imprisonment followed by three years supervised released for distribution and possession with intent to distribute d-methamphetamine hydrochloride.
