Inos: Release of rebates may take a while

In an interview on Friday, Inos said income tax returns were still being filed and the Division of Revenue and Taxation was still processing them.

“We’re not at the point that we are ready to start paying the rebates,” he said.

Perhaps at the end of June, he added, Rev & Tax “would probably be in the position to start making payments.”

Right now, he said division is “so understaffed.”

He said the government expects 20,000 to 30,000 people to file their tax returns.

The Department of Finance, he added, is now trying to set up a system through which it can process both the returns and the advance child tax credits at the same time.

Because the federal government’s tax cut has been extended, each parent who is a taxpayer can expect additional $400 in rebates.

Rev & Tax compliance manager Elpidia B. Camacho, in a separate interview, said they had already received about 12,000 returns and had started entering these into their system.

Last year, she said over 20,000 people filed tax returns.

Asked how soon they can complete the process and release the rebates, Camacho said it depends on how fast they can feed each individual’s information into their computer system.

She said they are very “short-handed.” They only have seven staff members so she could not guarantee to have it all done by June.

Rev & Tax still has no director.
