Int’l military exercises underway at Pearl Harbor

HONOLULU (AP) — Naval forces from the United States and seven other Pacific Rim and European countries are participating in four weeks of military exercises throughout Hawaii.

The biannual RIMPAC exercises got underway Tuesday at Pearl Harbor with briefings for the 11,000 military personnel from eight countries.

Rear Adm. Mark J. Edwards, a commander with the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz Battle Group, said the activities won’t focus specifically on anti-terrorism operations.

Exercises, which will include air and sea maneuvers, live gunnery activities, missile firing tests and anti-submarine warfare, are scheduled throughout Hawaii including at Pacific locations around Oahu and at the Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai.

Along with the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, Japan, South Korea and England are also participating in the exercises, scheduled to run through July 23.
