The doctors began their journey when they first met in college going through medical school. They fell in love, and because of that, their love was strong enough to endure the hardships of the many, many years of medical school. A week after their graduation from medical school at the University of Arizona in Tucson, they become husband and wife in 2004.
Since graduating from medical school, they pursued their individual specialties.
Dr. Layla Corral Lucas was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her mother Antonia Palacios Corral is Chamorro from Saipan.
Dr. Layla C. Lucas completed her internship and residency at the U of A. In 2010 she became board certified in general surgery and in 2011 completed a two-year fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery. Her Fellowship provided a particular emphasis on amputation prevention through their work with the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance. She has a special interest is in limb salvage, stroke prevention and treatment of aneurysmal disease.
Dr. Layla C. Lucas is currently board eligible in vascular surgery. She is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, International Society of Endovascular Specialists, Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, as well as other vascular, general, and regional organizations.
Dr. Layla C. Lucas is now in private practice as a physician at Saguaro Surgical, PC, and is available at Tucson Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and Tucson Surgical Center.
Her husband, Dr. Tony R. Lucas, is an Arizona native, born in Phoenix and raised in Tucson.
Dr. Tony R. Lucas attended medical school at Drexel University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and received his Doctor of Medicine in 2004 at the U of A. He then completed his internship and residency training at the U of A in Anesthesiology in 2008.
Dr. Tony R. Lucas is currently on the faculty at the U of A as an assistant professor of anesthesiology. He is also a board certified anesthesiologist.
He is the director of post anesthesia care unit recovery center at University Medical Center hospital, which is Tucson’s only level 1 trauma center.
He is also active in medical student education being director of the Medical Student Interest Group.
Dr. Tony R. Lucas is a member of the Acute Pain Service and specializes in all facets of anesthesia care, including general, pediatric, cardiac, vascular, and regional pain medicine.
Moreover, both doctors are fluent in Spanish.
Like most doctors, they have very little time off and when they do, they enjoy traveling, doing various home improvement projects, but most of all, spoiling their English bulldog “Rosie.”
