Jobless foreigners urged to register at DES

JOBLESS foreigners in the CNMI, including those with pending labor cases, will be asked to register at the Division of Employment Services as the government tries to limit the number of alien workers in the Northern Marianas.

DES Director Alfred Pangelinan said they want employers to tap available manpower resources in the CNMI.

Non-resident workers whose contracts have ended but are legally allowed to stay in the CNMI within a 45-day grace period are urged to register, Pangelinan said.

But alien workers who have successfully found new employers do not need to register, he added.

“We are encouraging people with labor cases and those who are transferring within 45 days to register here at our division,” he said. “Employers call us every now and then looking for any available workers,” he added.

Pangelinan, however, said employers will be first given a list of available resident workers. If none of the local jobseekers matches the employer’s needs, then the registered available foreign workers will be tapped, he said.
