THE CNMI Judiciary has scheduled the Law and the Freshman Legislator Seminar on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. At the seminar, the judges of the CNMI Judiciary and the U.S. District Court will give several presentations to the newly elected members of the Commonwealth Legislature. Current and newly elected members of the municipal councils have also been invited to participate for the first time.
All four newly elected legislators — one senator and three representatives — have registered to attend the program at Guma’ Hustisia. Those legislators are:
• Senator-elect Ronnie M. Calvo (Rota)
• Representative-elect Raymond U. Palacios (Saipan)
• Representative-elect Daniel I. Aquino Jr. (Saipan)
• Representative-elect Elias M. Rangamar (Saipan)
Carmen C. Pangelinan is the sole councilmember who has registered to attend the seminar.
The seminar includes a lecture on the Covenant and the CNMI and U.S. Constitutions, an overview of the judicial process, a discussion on the common law, a presentation on legal research methods, and a roundtable discussion between the newly elected officials and the judges and justices.
“This seminar continues to be an invaluable opportunity to foster relationships between the Judiciary and newly-elected officials while deepening their understanding of the vital role of the judicial branch in our government,” Chief Justice Alexandro C. Castro said.
Since 2004, the seminar has hosted 89 legislators and has earned widespread praise for its informative and collaborative approach. Its lasting success has made it a staple among the Judiciary’s outreach programs.
