Jury trial begins for third man in theft of government property case

The trial of 35-year old Masaoishy Sallem started yesterday after a panel of jurors was selected to hear his case.

Sallem is represented by his counsel, Steven Pixley.

Sallem was indicted with two other co-defendants Dominic Chipwelong and James Ochcha for conspiracy to sell government property and theft of government property.

Sallem’s co-defendant, 24-year-old Chipwelong was sentenced to a 10-month jail term and three-year supervised release.

The federal court also ordered him to pay $35,490 in restitution jointly with Ochcha and to perform 100 hours of community service.

The federal court has set 52-year-old Ochcha’s sentencing for Oct. 27.

Ochcha pleaded guilty to the indictment which charged him with one count of conspiracy to sell government property and one count of destruction of a veterans memorial.

Sallem and his co-defendants were charged with stealing portions of metal lighting units and selling them to a recycling center in Nov. 2007.
