Jury trial of garment factory worker in ‘ice’ case begins

The jury trial against Yong Ming Song was  scheduled for Jan. 12, 2009 after he entered a not guilty plea to the charges during his arraignment in November last year.

Yong Ming Song’s arrest yielded the second biggest haul of “ice” in the CNMI, police said.

He waived advisement of his rights and the reading of the indictment before U.S. District Court for the NMI Designated Presiding Judge David A. Wiseman.

The indictment stated that Yong Ming Song possessed with intent to distribute 138 grams of “ice” on Sept. 11, 2008 while within 1,000 feet near Northern Marianas High School.

Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Daniel Holcomb stated in his affidavit that at about 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 11, the Department of Public Safety police officers followed Yong Ming Song who was driving a white Corolla in Susupe for not wearing a seatbelt.

Yong Ming Song was sweating and shaking when police officers asked for his license.

The police officers also smelled alcohol in the defendant’s breath.

The defendant’s nervous actions prompted the officers to ask him to get out of the car and check his vehicle, which led to the recovery of a plastic bag with a duffel bag inside it.

Inside the bag were 15 small Ziploc bags containing a foil package that had a crushed, glass like substance inside, which later tested positive for ice.

Holcomb placed Yong Ming Song under arrest and transported him to the CNMI Department of Corrections.
