Jury trial of man in fake ID scheme to start on Aug. 4

At the pre-trial hearing on Thursday, Colin Thompson, the court-appointed defense counsel, told District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona that it may take two days to present his case.

Piao has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy to unlawfully produce an identification document.

He is currently out of custody after being released under his own recognizance.

According to the prosecution, between May 13, 2017 and May 16, 2017, Piao knowingly and intentionally conspired and agreed with another person to commit an offense — specifically, without lawful authority, to produce a false identification document in violation of U.S. code.

Piao was arrested and charged in October 2019.

Piao a citizen of the People’s Republic of China speaks more comfortably in Korean, according to court documents.
