KagHS journalism students visit Variety

In preparation for the upcoming fourth publication of the “Ayuyu Times”  10 senior and sophomore students taking up the elective course in journalism met with Marianas Variety president Laila Y. Boyer and publisher Abed Younis who encouraged them to join the newspaper’s editorial team.

Boyer, for her part, encouraged students to pursue journalism and become reporters in the CNMI.

She talked about the duties and responsibilities of a reporter, which include meeting with celebrities and influential persons in the society and government.

The students also met Maryalen Conrad, who was the MV president yesterday as part of the Manamko’ Takeover Day.

“They asked me if I like my job,” Conrad said. “I said yes.”

During a tour of the Variety’s building in Garapan, the students  saw the printing presses and other machines involved in the production of the newspaper.

The students also asked this reporter about preparing for interviews and how to cover media events.

Irene Park, the journalism class teacher said, the visit was intended for the student to familiarize themselves with publication of a newspaper.

The Ayuyu Times will be printed at the Variety.

She said the contents  of their newspaper include school reports, entertainment, sports, horoscopes and advice to students.
