Kagman community leader is new Democratic Party chairman

Environmental advocate Angelo Villagomez, the party’s new public information officer, said Torres was unanimously elected by the central executive committee during a meeting in Chalan Kanoa on Thursday.

Torres has been helping then- chairman Manny Sablan reorganize the party since last year.

Torres was also assisting in the efforts to affiliate with the Democratic National Committee.

Villagomez said long time Democrats and individuals who are new to local politics attended the meeting last week.

The party, he added, has filled its six committees with chairmen and members.

The central committee, Villagomez said, may also amend the party’s by-laws.

But any amendment will only be adopted in the party’s best interest, he said.

Other party members told Variety that some of the people who attended the meeting and showed interest in joining the local Democratic Party include local citizens vocal about the CNMI’s many pressing issues.

Torres said the party now consists of visionaries, advocates and activists who aim to unite for common goals.

One of the main goal of the group, he added, is to restore the people’s confidence in the CNMI government by carefully selecting candidates who have no special or self serving interests.

“The New Democrats will select real candidates who are doers and can deliver. The New Democrats want to end the abuse of public funds and the abuse of the public’s trust,” he said.

“The New  Democrats believe that they are very much in touch with today’s CNMI, thanks to the strategic mix of Democratic officers. Many potential candidates are already meeting with the group and the group will soon announce their final selection to run under the Democratic banner. The group’s slogan is ‘New Beginning, New Leaders, New Direction.’ ”
