Kagman residents to combat criminality

Kagman resident Glenn Dikito, one of the supervisors of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s water and wastewater division, said he will volunteer to be a block captain of the Neighborhood Watch Task Force.

Initially, he said, he talked with the prime mover behind the task force, Saipan municipal council chairman Ramon B. Camacho, regarding the need for a similar group in Kagman.

“There’s really a need for our community to organize,” Dikito said.

He said burglary and theft cases are on rise in Kagman.

Dikito said Kagman High School vice principal Eric M. Magofna has also expressed interest to volunteer as a block captain.

Magofna, he said, will discuss the creation of a task force with parents and teachers in the next PTA meeting.

Camacho is happy with how the community is responding to neighborhood watch program.

“People are now showing more interest and we are encouraging others to also join us,” he said.

He said they are now finalizing the Neighborhood Watch Task Force bylaws, copies of which will be distributed to villages so residents can make suggestions and recommendations.

Dikito said the Department of Public Safety should have a police outpost in Kagman.

Police visibility in the area is necessary to ensure an immediate response in case of emergency, he added.

But Camacho, a former police major, said DPS lack manpower to maximize its presence on island.

“That’s why we have to combat crime and not necessarily rely always on the government,” he added.
