Sablan, in a telephone interview yesterday, said he received Fitial’s letter on Tuesday.
It’s a long letter that contains a lot of things the governor wants done. Some require the passage of legislation in the U.S. Congress.
“Where we can help, we will help,” Sablan said.
Fitial who went to Washington, D.C. to attend the National Governors Association said in a press statement that he asked Sablan to help the CNMI get more capital improvement project funds.
He wants Sablan to introduce a bill that will amend U.S. Public Law 94-241 as amended by P.L. 104-134.
U.S. P.L.104-134 reduced the islands’ annual Covenant funding from $27.7 million to $11 million.
The governor also asked Sablan to fund a training program for CNMI government employees who will soon have to work in the private sector.
The governor’s third request is a proposal in the U.S. Congress to allow the CNMI to reprogram Covenant 702 funds to reduce the commonwealth’s outstanding long-term debt and address its immediate financial needs.
Although it’s not easy to get all what Fitial is asking, Sablan said he will have to respond to the governor’s requests.
