King: DOLI-Tinian should develop human resources

FORMER Miss CNMI-Universe Janet King, Tinian’s newly confirmed labor and immigration resident director, vows to have more educated, certified and trained DOLI-Tinan employees.

King, whose nomination was confirmed by the Tinian Municipal Council late last week, said she “may be constantly placed in a very difficult position” due to the “enormous changes” that she wants to implement in the department.

“(I) can foresee the enormous pressures and problems associated with running (DOLI-Tinian) if we continue to maintain the status quo,” King said.

“I believe that if we all work together…no one has to stretch… standards of honesty and integrity for the sake of the system to work for us,” said King, whose nomination received overwhelming support from local officials.

Developing the department’s human resources is the key, she added.

“The importance of educated, certified and trained employees is critical to the success of the department. The very nature of this department requires practical knowledge of the policies governing labor and immigration matters. In addition, personal contact with the public…must be reassessed,” King said.

The communication and practical skills of the department’s personnel “should be developed” such as report writing and “a firm grasp of the English language,” she added.

The department “must (also) work to find ways to encourage and locate private sector employment” for local residents, she said.

Further, the department should ensure that laws are enforced and the presence of alien labor on Tinian is monitored.
