WASHINGTON, D.C. (Office of the CNMI Congressional Delegate) — U.S. Congresswoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds is encouraging residents of the Marianas to stay informed as the federal government faces the possibility of a funding lapse beginning at 12 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 1, 2025 (EST), or 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 (CNMI time).
“If a shutdown does occur, it may cause delays in services that families and businesses depend on,” said Congresswoman King-Hinds. “Your congressional office will stay open and accessible to help constituents with questions or issues as they arise.”
The Congresswoman emphasized her interest in ensuring the public understands what to expect locally. “There’s been a lot of discussion nationally, but I want to make sure people in the Marianas understand what the shutdown means and how it may affect government operations here at home.”
A U.S. government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass a budget or a temporary funding bill. During a shutdown, many federal agencies reduce operations, and some employees may be furloughed or required to work without pay.
Key programs like Social Security and Medicare will continue, though new applications and some services may be delayed. Medicaid services and passport processing are expected to remain unaffected. Active-duty military personnel will remain on duty but could experience pay interruptions until funding is restored. VA medical services are expected to continue, and most veterans’ benefits should remain available.
Other services may experience disruption depending on the duration of a shutdown. Approvals for federal housing and small business loans may be delayed, and new student aid disbursements could slow once prior appropriated funds are exhausted. Tours of federal buildings in Washington, D.C., such as the Capitol and White House, will be suspended.
Mail delivery through USPS will continue without interruption. Customs and Border Protection and Transportation Security Administration operations at the airport will also remain unaffected.
Congresswoman King-Hinds’ district offices will remain open to assist the public throughout the duration of any shutdown. Residents who need help with a federal agency or are awaiting responses to pending cases are encouraged to contact the Saipan office at (670) 323-2647. Response times from certain federal agencies may be delayed during a shutdown.
“My priority is to make sure CNMI residents continue to have access to information and assistance,” said King-Hinds. “My team and I will be here to help in any way we can, and I will provide more updates as the deliberations progress in Washington, D.C.”
