TINIAN Mayor Francisco M. Borja has appointed former CNMI Miss Universe Janet King as resident director for the Department of Labor and Immigration on Tinian.
King was “highly recommended” by Tinian lawmakers.
“King’s professional qualifications and experience will be an asset to the department and to the Tinian community,” said a letter to Borja signed by Sens. Joaquin G. Adriano, D-Tinian; Jose M. Dela Cruz, D-Tinian; David M. Cing, D-Tinian; and Rep. Norman S. Palacios, D-Tinian.
The former beauty queen in an interview with Variety on Wednesday said her appointment “is an awesome challenge,” but she is ready to take it on.
“I’ve got a lot of good staff and I am very proud to be part of the mayor’s Cabinet. I would really like to say thanks to the Tinian Municipal Council members with whom I worked with for almost three years,” said King, who served as director for the council.
She said she does have other aspirations, but it was her parents and the mayor who convinced her to stay on and accept the challenge.
Under Tinian law, the Municipal Council has 30 days to confirm King’s nomination.
King said her goals include upgrading the image of the department and maintaining an open line of communication with the public.
“I would also focus on the concerns by the federal government,” she said.
“I’d like to make sure that our first and foremost goal is the department itself. How it can be a better department, how it can better Tinian as well as the CNMI. And overall, keeping in mind the newly confirmed DOLI secretary as well as the (Babauta) administration’s vision that we must meet,” she added.
