Labor may set deadline for guest workers orientation

Labor Administrative Division Director Rose Ada-Hocog said their office will now set a deadline for the orientation.

The orientation, she added, is an important requirement and newly arrived guest workers will face deportation proceedings if they fail to attend it.

Although, the numbers of foreign workers not attending orientation on the scheduled day is still “manageable,” Ada-Hocog said Labor “must address this concern.”

There’s no reason for the newly arrived foreign workers not to attend the orientation program because Labor has  also extended the program to Rota and Tinian, she added.

Ada-Hocog said their office may publish the names of those foreign workers who have yet to attend the orientation.

If the foreign worker continues not to attend the orientation, Labor will submit their names to the Attorney General Office “for proper action,” she said.

The orientation is required by the new labor law, P.L. 15-108, to provide foreign workers better understanding about their rights and obligations while they are employed in the CNMI.

Labor conducts the orientation every Tuesday using an audio-video presentation available in English, Filipino, Chinese and Korean.

Ada-Hocog said they have been receiving good feedback from the participants “because the orientation is very informative.”
