Law Revision Commission releases three new publications

The Law Revision Commission is an independent judicial   agency responsible for compiling, editing, and codifying all laws of the CNMI into an organized system with the mission of making them available to the public.

Because laws impact lives every day, it is essential that commonwealth residents and people who do business with  the commonwealth have simple and timely access to legislation, judiciary rulings, and agency regulations.

The commission provides free and timely access to the CNMI Constitution, the Covenant, public and local laws, judicial opinions, court rules, and other related general information over its internet website at www.cnmilaw.org.

Having access to the law is vital for the existence of a democratic society and its success.

By compiling, updating, and making laws available in an organized system, the commission provides commonwealth residents, businesses and potential investors of the CNMI with access to CNMI law so that they may know their rights as they pursue their personal and professional endeavors.

The three new publications, available for purchase at the commission office in the Law Library of the House of Justice, Guma Hustisia, Iimwal Aweewe in Susupe or through the commission’s website, www.cnmilaw.org., are:

The 2010 Commonwealth Code

A revised version of the Commonwealth Code containing the codified version of all CNMI public laws through December 31, 2010 is available in a five volume set with a separate index.

This publication includes case annotations — citations to Supreme Court cases starting in 1989 and other significant earlier cases — as well as the Constitution, the Covenant and other legal documents relating to the formation of the CNMI.

As cumulative supplements or pocket-parts to the code are prepared, update tables of statutory activity from public and local laws are available on the commission’s website.

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Digest of Decisions & Citations

This comprehensive digest, which represents the spectrum of CNMI case law with precedence starting in 1979, is a landmark publication for the Law Revision Commission.

The digest contains analysis of all published decisions of the CNMI Supreme Court from the court’s creation in June 1989 through December 31, 2007 and analysis of significant decisions of the commonwealth trial court and the District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands, trial and appellate divisions from 1979 until 1989.

Use of this digest will eliminate the current practice of having to consult four separate decision digests of separate publications — the Commonwealth Reporter Volumes 1-3, Northern Mariana Islands Reporter Volumes 1-4, Volume 5,  and Volume 6.

Case law research will be greatly enhanced and simplified by the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Digest of Decisions & Citations.

Northern Mariana Islands Reporter Volume 7

This long awaited publication contains head-noted Supreme Court decisions from 2004 to 2007.  Head-notes are summaries of the main principles and significant facts decided in a court opinion.
