Lawmaker joins community workers, inmates in cleanup drive

To address this problem, Rep. Raymond D. Palacios, Covenant-Saipan, with the support of seven inmates from the Department of Correction and two community workers cleaned up the area yesterday.

The inmates were under the supervision of Corrections Lt. J.M Quintanilla.

Due to economic crisis, Palacios said, the budgets of government agencies tasked to clear roadsides have been affected and they have to prioritize their operations.

He said although the Department of Public Work has limited manpower, the community has a lot of volunteers.

The cleanup drive started two weeks ago and involved primary roads and those within the villages, Palacios said, adding that they have two groups assigned to these areas.

Group 1 is responsible for clearing the primary roads once every week, but Palacios said they may do it twice a week.

The other group conducts a cleanup drive in As Lito, As Perdido, Chalan Kanoa 1, 2, 3 and 4 and Susupe.

Quintanilla said they are happy and willing to help.

“This is good for the inmates,” he added.

He said some of the inmates are required to community service.

“The opening of schools is coming and we have to help clean up the area,” he added.

Palacios said there is no financial support involved in the cleanup drive and the Department of Corrections had to provide equipment and transportation.
