Lawmaker may introduce bill on appliance damage claims against CUC

Reyes, R-Saipan, said some of his appliances broke down following the power surges that occurred on Saturday in As Perdido.

He said the first power surge took place at 1:45 a.m. and the second one happened at 4 a.m. — his television set, a personal computer, and a couple of other home appliances short-circuited.

The electronic components of the appliances were burned, he added.

The lawmaker said his air-conditioning unit and refrigerator were also damaged due to power surges in the past.

“We don’t mind paying high [power] rates, so long as we don’t get shortchanged,” said Reyes.

He said he “will be writing a letter soon to CUC about these complaints, especially monetary damages, that burden the general public.”

He will also solicit similar complaints from CUC customers regarding the damage to their appliances.

Reyes’s  phone number on Capital Hill is 664-8836.

“My office is willing to gather complaints,” he said.

He said the complainants should provide their names, addresses, phone numbers and the types and estimated costs of the damage to their household appliances caused by power surges.

“Somebody has to pay for it –and it’s  not going to be the consumers,” he added.

Reyes estimated that the damage to his appliances amounted to about $2,000.
