Lawyers call for quick decision on Fiji case

Society president Isireli Fa said the decision will determine the legality of the interim government and its action.

“At this moment, the whole of Fiji awaits eagerly the result of the case instituted by the deposed prime minister of Fiji, Laisenia Qarase,” he said.

Fa said it has been three months since the case was completed in the High Court.

“We call on the judiciary that this decision is delivered at the earliest possible time,” he said.

Fa said the relationship between the society and the judiciary has been “one of non-engagement and being apart” since the Dec. 5, 2006 coup.

He said the law society is unable to engage the judiciary until issues concerning the appointment of judges and the composition of the Judicial Services Commission under the 1997 Constitution are resolved.

In related news, local lawyers were reminded to promote and defend the law so the society is able to maintain the rule of law.

Australian Law Council president Ray Ross, speaking at the opening of the three-day Fiji Law Society annual convention at the Westin Denarau Resort, said lawyers cannot protect the rule of law through public advocacy alone.

“The role of lawyers is to promote and defend the law in order that that society is equipped with the laws the tools to maintain the rule of law as a foundation for a just and equitable society,” he said.

He told lawyers to set, and live, high professional and ethical standards.
