Leadership row in Vanuatu’s opposition

Wells decision was made known to MP for Port Vila, Carlot Korman and MP for Malekula, Sato Kilman, in a letter.

Recently, a parliamentary opposition bloc led by People’s Progressive Party MP Sato Kilman claimed they command the majority of MPs in the Opposition, and claimed MP Kilman is their new leader.

This claim was later refuted by Korman who said he is still the leader of opposition because his VRP party is the biggest single party in the opposition.

Both leaders have written separate letters to the speaker to claim their leadership of the opposition.

However, the speaker said he has nothing to do with the nomination of the opposition leader, and said it is an in-house issue for the MPs on the opposition side of parliament to resolve.

He said this must be done through a meeting by opposition MPs and that the minutes of the meeting must indicate a) the removal of the current opposition leader, b) the election of a new opposition leader, and c), it must confirm the support of the existing leader.
