‘Letters of Hope’ for Japan

As of April 11, the Saipan mayor’s office had collected over 500 letters from students of Kagman Elementary School, Chacha Oceanview Junior High School, Koblerville kindergarten morning and afternoon classes and Koblerville Elementary School.

Last week, the mayor’s office announced that it had asked students and other members of the community to write letters or draw  pictures expressing their message to the disaster victims of Japan.

The project called “Kibo No Tegami-Letters of Hope” was launched in support of the local relief, the mayor’s executive secretary Vinycia Seman said.

She said they are expecting more letters to be collected from other schools this week.

Mayor Donald G. Flores said it is important to comfort the victims through letters.

“I would like to extend my appreciation for the kids for taking time in writing words of comfort for the Japanese community,” the mayor said.

Most of the letters were written on artwork and some students submitted drawings and creative paper folding.

“Though these difficult times, we pray that they stay strong and rise above the challenges of recovery,” Flores said, referring to the Japanese people.
