Lions Club to hold medical mission on Saturday

Prior to the medical mission, the group will hold a motorcade from Susupe to Garapan on Middle Road, region secretary Paul Madriaga said.

The medical mission, which will start at 7 a.m. and end at 11 a.m., will be held in observance of World Diabetes Month.

The mission will focus on vision screening, hearing testing, blood pressure and blood sugar testing.

The mission is open to everyone.

Madriaga said the vision screening will be conducted by the Guam Lions who will bring in their own equipment and technicians.

The Department of Public Health will conduct its own diabetes awareness program in Kagman but will provide two programs during the Lions’ medical mission: the newborn hearing screening program and the early childhood comprehensive system program for children five years old and younger.

The department will set up an information booth and lend its mobile clinic for the hearing screening test to be conducted by Guam Lions and clinicians.

The nursing department of  Northern Marianas College and the University of Loyola at CNMI will send volunteers to conduct blood pressure and blood sugar testing.

Madriaga said the Lions Club is known for its sight prevention program in the U.S.

On Saturday, they will set up a collection box at the medical mission site for old and used eyeglasses.

The donated eyeglasses will be cleaned, sorted, packaged and distributed to people in need.

Madriaga is encouraging former Lions who are still on island to support the mission and be part of the “We Serve” community program.
