Local Census office prepares to close

“We are so proud to be the first to finish,” said Juan Borja, Local Census Office manager.  Our staff worked hard and CNMI residents took the Census very seriously and cooperated with our staff ensuring they were counted.”

Rota and Tinian concluded their follow-up activities a few weeks ago, and Saipan workers finished all follow-up field work last week, several weeks ahead of schedule.

“I am pleased with the outcome of the 2010 CNMI Census. The hard work and dedication of the entire community has resulted in our timely completion,” said CNMI Secretary of Commerce, Michael Ada. “The effective leadership demonstrated by the CNMI Census Management and the dedication of the field staff enabled our community to effectively execute this important and massive undertaking without incident.”

“The U.S. Census Bureau has expressed their thanks to the staff and residents for their dedication to the project, said Rebecca Diaz-Cartagena, U.S. Census advisor.  “It is hard to believe that my time in the CNMI is coming to an end.  Everyone made me feel like I was part of their family and it made being far away from home so much easier,” she added.

After all Census materials are sent to the U.S. for processing, the remaining staff will complete required reports, pack all remaining materials and officially close the office.

“It is hard to believe that the CNMI Census has come to an end.  It went very smoothly, and the CNMI will be able to get its fair share of the federal funding available to states and territories because we have an accurate count and true snapshot of who we are as a Commonwealth,” Borja said.
