Educational program for K-12 educators

(Press Release) — “Saipan’s Land and Sea: Living Stories of the Past, Present, and Future” is a one-week educational program that provides K-12 educators an incomparable opportunity to interact with a continuous, intact, and largely undisturbed record of conflict history in landmarks on and around the island of Saipan. Participants will learn how to expand and enhance their knowledge of U.S. history and culture through an exploration of historical landmarks and stories and enrich existing humanities curricula.

The program is sponsored by the National Endowment for Humanities and in collaboration with East Carolina University or ECU in Greenville, North Carolina. Dr. Anne Ticknor, professor in the College of Education at ECU, will lead a team of educators, historians, authors, and cultural guides who will provide an examination of resource materials and exploration of landmarks related to WWII history and heritage.

The one-week program will be offered twice. The first program offering is June 27-July 3, and the second program is July 6-12, 2026. Participants will receive a $1,300 stipend at the conclusion of the program.

Applications are currently open to full- or part-time K-12 educators who teach in public, charter, independent, and religiously affiliated schools, or as home schooling educators. Museum educators and other K-12 school system personnel are also eligible to apply. Applications are accepted until March 6, 2026 (11:59 p.m. PST).
