(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) — A strong shear line near Saipan will slowly drop southward over the coming days. Moisture will pool along the shear line, allowing for higher rainfall rates.
Forecast models indicate 2 to 4 inches of rainfall are likely across the Marianas. Forecast guidance also indicates the potential for thunderstorms to develop along the shear line late Monday evening into Tuesday morning and again Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Uncertainty remains high regarding the location of these thunderstorms and where the heaviest rain will fall. However, localized rainfall exceeding 6 inches is possible, which could result in flash flooding. Excessive rainfall rates greater than 2 inches per hour may also lead to localized flash flooding.
Mudslides are not expected during this event, as antecedent conditions do not meet the threshold for slope failures.
Residents in the Marianas are advised to closely monitor this developing situation, as flood advisories and flash flood warnings may be issued.
Those living near streams and rivers should prepare to move items away from banks. Residents, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas, should ensure nearby storm drains are clear and not clogged.
Acting Gov. Dennis James C. Mendiola advised the public that localized flooding is possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas and urged residents to take precautionary measures.
