(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) — Confidence continues to increase regarding the potential for heavy rainfall sometime this weekend and into the early part of next week.
Currently, a broad and weak circulation is in the initial stages of formation south-southeast of Chuuk and south-southwest of Kosrae, and north of Kapingamarangi.
This disturbance is expected to move slowly west-northwest toward the Marianas over the next several days. As it does so, periods of locally heavy rainfall may develop. Gusty winds are also possible with heavier showers or thunderstorms.
At this time, model guidance indicates at least medium confidence that 5 to 10 inches of rainfall could occur, with locally higher amounts possible.
Due to antecedent rainfall of more than 4 inches in some locations, the potential for flash flooding and mudslides is higher than normal.
If forecast confidence continues to increase, a flash flood watch may be issued in later forecasts.
Timing: Late Friday through early to mid-next week. Confidence in timing is medium.
Location: All of the Marianas.
Impacts: Widespread rainfall is expected to develop, with some periods of locally heavy rain. Current estimates indicate 5 to 10 inches of rainfall may occur, with isolated higher totals possible.
Gov. David M. Apatang is advising the public that localized flooding may occur in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Residents are urged to ensure nearby storm drains are clear, especially in flood-prone locations.
