CNMI teachers embrace new tools for student success

(PSS) – Before the new school year began, teachers across the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Public School System gathered for a series of professional development sessions organized by the Office of Curriculum and Instruction. The focus: empowering educators with effective intervention tools from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) — Writable, READ 180, and MATH 180.

These programs are designed to meet students where they are, using personalized and data-driven instruction. The sessions gave teachers a confident start, equipping them with new strategies to support every learner in the classroom.

During the workshops, teachers explored how each program could transform their daily instruction. READ 180 helps students strengthen reading comprehension through adaptive lessons. MATH 180 builds confidence and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Writable, meanwhile, enhances writing instruction by offering immediate feedback and revision tools, helping students become stronger, more independent writers.

PSS’s decision to invest in these trainings reflects its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student success. By ensuring that every teacher received hands-on professional learning before the first day of school, the system ensured that classrooms would start the year strong—with teachers ready and inspired to deliver high-quality instruction.

Beyond the initial workshops on Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, HMH continues to provide ongoing one-to-one coaching throughout the year. These personalized sessions allow teachers to refine small-group instruction, analyze student data, and apply MTSS-aligned strategies to address classroom challenges. The continuous coaching model ensures that educators are supported every step of the way, fostering collaboration and sustained professional growth.

As a result of this partnership, students across the CNMI are benefiting from more engaging, responsive, and effective teaching practices. With the steadfast support of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction—and the dedication of CNMI’s educators—schools are strengthening their MTSS framework to ensure that every student can learn, succeed, and thrive.

Together, HMH and the CNMI Public School System are advancing a shared vision of continuous improvement, academic excellence, and success for all.
